objet trouvé (= found art) is a compilation created in two phases. the first phase involved gathering the raw material for later track creation. a group of tonAtom artists collected and contributed samples of various kinds. the guidelines for these sounds were: (a) percussion-like elements, either sampled or synthesized; (b) actual objet trouvé material recorded from the real world—no restrictions here, anything from vocals to field recordings; and (c) synthetic sounds such as synth atmospheres, drones, one-shot tones or similar, preferably (but not necessarily) with melodic traits, but free of rhythm and harmony.
this pool of samples was then compiled and passed on to the artists, initiating the second phase: the creation of new music using only these building blocks.
the rules were simple (aside from the sine qua non requirement that all music be licensed under creative commons): (a) use *only* the provided material; and (b) apply collage techniques rather than extreme resynthesis—the original characteristics of most samples should remain recognizable.
the result is this release: six diverse tracks. marco sebastian christ (of ne:o fame), sternenspringer, dreamlogicc, and xenoton are familiar names to tonAtom listeners. with area and sibilant (both from north america), we also welcome two new contributors—maybe there’s more to come...
all samples used for this release are available for download under a non-commercial creative commons license (thanks to all the artists!). if you’d like to contribute a track for a potential objet trouvé 2.0 compilation, get in touch via info@tonAtom.net (please note: cc-licensed, no collecting societies. tonAtom is about free, legal music.)
or just check whether the artists actually followed the rules... :-)
